Ancient city of Hierapolis Turkey

The ruins of Hierapolis ancient city or "Holy City" (in transla6ion from Greek) is located in about 17 kilometers from the Denizli close to Pamukkale. They are located on a mountain hill whose height is 350 meters. The first buildings on the site of Hierapolis appeared in the 2nd millennium BC. One of the most important sights of Hierapolis Turkey is an ancient theater that is located on the hillside. The building is constructed of solid rock and the overall height of its steps is about one hundred meters. Fifty rows separated by walkways on seven sectors are seats for spectators. After the completion of the constructions works the theater could accommodate about ten thousand people. Here you can also see the Hierapolis ruins of the Temple of Apollo.

The city played an important role in the spread of Christianity. The one of the 12 apostles - Saint Philip died in and was buried in ancient city of Hierapolis Turkey. For the preaching he was executed (crucified upside down) in 87 AD (during the reign of the Roman Emperor Domitian).

In 395 AD the Hierapolis ancient city came under Byzantine control. Constantine the Great made it the capital of the region of Phrygia and at the same time the center of the bishopric.

There is one of the largest cemeteries (necropolis) in Asia Minor of Hellenistic, Roman and Early Christianity cultures that rises from all sides to the walls of the city. In ancient times the Hierapolis was famous for its thermal springs a huge number of patients were coming hoping for healing. Many of them having recovered could return to their homes while others remained here forever. This explains the huge size of the local necropolis.
